Montreat Gate

We arrived in the Town of Montreat shortly before 5:00 PM.  The youth hung out while the advisors completed registration and check-in.   We’re staying in Howerton Hall, a dorm of Montreat College that is as old as the mountain.  But at least it has air conditioning!!   Don’t believe anyone who says you don’t need A/C in Montreat in the summertime.  We eat our meals in the attached cafeteria, which is actually quite decent.

Howerton

We got a great lakeside parking spot for our bright red vehicles.  We chose
the color of the cars to coincide with the conference theme, “World on Fire.”
Really?  No, not really.  But we were easy to spot on the way up.

As we passed the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School, one of our youth  called everyone else in the van to give a guided tour over the speakerphone!

Tallulah

We made the obligatory stop at “Tallulah Point,”  the wonderfully rustic store that overlooks Tallulah Gorge.  They have Coke in glass bottles, RC Cola & Moonpies, loads of candy, and an amazing collection of mountain crafts and obscure toys…not to mention the largest stock of Bert’s Bee’s products I’ve ever seen.

All loaded up…

We gathered Sunday morning at 9:30 to pack the vehicles, then we attended the 11:00 worship service to be commissioned for the conference.  Right after the Assurance of Pardon, Pastor Jane gathered the children to tell them about our trip and encourage them to look forward to their own participation in the Montreat Youth Conference.  Then we were commissioned and dismissed from the service.  It was wonderful to make our exit down the center aisle while the congregation offered greetings of Christ’s peace.
